the tigh way

*tigh, pronounced tigg or tee depending on where you live on the island of Ireland is the Irish word for home, homestead or cluster.

Finding beauty in sensory moments that bring us joy, describes the tigh way and how I approach each project when designing beautiful, simple and informal spaces. I believe we can learn to slow down by being purposeful and intentional about how we consume and what we incorporate into our homes for its functionality and sentimentality. Whether you are at the exciting phase of planning a new build, own your own property or live in a temporary space, we all share the capacity to create authentic homes that are impactful and meaningful to us.

considered by starting with you, let’s learn more about what matters to you most. how do you live? how do you wish to live? what are your values? are you precious about how something should appear or does ‘form follow function.’ what are your needs and expectations? let’s consider if we can first meet those and then decide if we are a good fit.

materials let’s consider natural materials for their sustainability, functionality, warmth and performance. How will they respond to daily wear and tear? How will these age with time? Will those first ring marks and scratches always bother you or do you see them become embedded in the building fabric with stories to tell over time.

detail and precision let’s iron out what really matters by paring back to the essential. Let’s look at materials and surfaces in detail, their junction, how they respond to their environment and how they work in context.

simplicity let’s start by clarifying the design process and simplifying decision-making. Let’s only choose items that we love, need or that have connection to us. Let’s look at simple design for functionality and longevity, reducing visual noise and for passing onto the next generation.

beauty let’s make your space beautiful while supporting our community of designer-makers and visual artists incorporating their handcraft into our homes to elevate the everyday practice of tasks and rituals. Let’s embrace familiarity through fleeting moments of recurring sound, memory scent, light and shadow throughout our day. Let’s begin to weave your narrative and craft a home that speaks of you.
